The Sweetest Smash: Capturing My Granddaughter’s Cake Smash
There are few things in life that bring me as much joy as capturing life’s sweet, fleeting moments through my lens. But nothing compares to the magic of photographing a cake smash — especially when the little one covered in frosting happens to be my own granddaughter.
Cake smashes are always a blast. The giggles, the curiosity, the mess — it’s all part of the fun. But photographing one for a client is one thing; photographing one for family, for my granddaughter, is something else entirely. It’s personal. It's layered with memories, pride, and a deep sense of wonder.
Watching my own children step into the role of parenthood is beautiful in itself. Seeing them love and raise their own little ones, to witness the legacy of love continue — it’s a full-circle moment that words can hardly describe. But photography allows me to capture it. To freeze that emotion, that connection, that fleeting milestone, forever.
As I looked through the lens at my granddaughter diving into her cake with wide eyes and chubby hands, I wasn’t just seeing frosting and bows. I was seeing generations. I was seeing time, joy, and love all wrapped up in one sticky, sugary moment shared with her ever-so-proud brother.
These are the kinds of sessions that remind me why I fell in love with photography in the first place. It’s not just about pretty pictures. It’s about connection. It’s about legacy. And every once in a while, it’s about cake.
